One of the beauties of homeschooling is the ability to work on your own time.  Today my son put himself down for a two hour nap.  After waking we had to eat and then go play soccer.  ( A game which we won, I'd like to add. )  It wasn't till we got home and the kids were asking to watch a movie that I realized Caspian hadn't gotten his reading lesson in.  So he and I settled into the Papasan chair with a big yellow book that uses the DISTAR approach and began reading sounds and words and then a story about a girl in a pet shop.  I caught myself deliriously happy at one moment because my son (a fresh five years old) was sitting on my lap laughing hysterically and reading perfectly.  I wanted to bottle that moment.  Not every reading lesson is filled with such joy, but that is exactly the emotion I want him to take with him on his journey of reading.  My daughter has already developed the thirst for the written word and the knowledge it imparts.  In fact, I gave my daughter the option of going to bed at bedtime or staying up to do geography.  She chose a geography lesson.  I feel so lucky.  I may not be doing everything right, but it's those little moments that help remind me that I'm on the right path.
